About Marji Gesick

Live Timing

On race day our timing partner, Superior Timing, will be posting live updates at this link. We’ll have timing mats at Marquette, Negaunee and the finish line so you can track your racer’s progress as they find their limits.

Welcome to Marquette County.

“The hardest single-day mountain bike event in the country.” – Jeremiah Bishop, 2017 Marji Gesick 100 Winner, Canyon Topeak Factory Racing. Da Marji, as referred to by locals, will fool you. Do your homework. Believe the stories. Prepare. Marquette County trails are littered with rocks, roots, and punchy climb after punchy climb hammering you into submission. In 2017 our DNF rate ran near 70% as unseasonably hot September weather melted the field. Weather in the U.P. can be defined as unpredictable. We encourage you to prepare for everything from a repeat of last year to the possibility of all-day rain or even flurries. Not kidding.

Self-Supported Ethos

You will be self-supported. There are no race operated aid stations. We will sign the course; however, signs fall down, people pull them down, bears eat them. You must be prepared to fend for yourself. Road rules apply. You will not find happy, smiling volunteers stopping traffic and waving your through – anywhere. You are on your own. If you finish expect to finish after dark. In the event of an emergency call 911. In recent years our community has developed a reputation for supporting Marji Gesick racers with “pop-up” aid stations. We are extremely lucky to live in an area where people care so much about other people. Our race team would like to share this word of caution: Pop-up aid stations are not operated by the race. They have no obligation to be there. There is no guarantee they will be in the same place this year or anywhere at all. We cannot stress enough – You are self-supported.

Take the Danny Hill Challenge

When we started the race in 2015 Danny said “No one will finish under 12-hours. I’ll give the first person who does $1.00.” So, if you happen to be the first finisher in one of our categories, you’ll go home with a buck and maybe a buckle (if you finish under 12-hours). For everyone else cash and prizes are not the goal – simply being strong enough to finish is.

The Buckle

Designed by local artist Gordon Gearheart our buckle has become synonymous with the definition of endurance and grit. The Marji buckle is as real and raw as the effort required to claim it. 100-Mile Mountain bikers finishing sub 12-hours and 100-mile Ultra-runners finishing under 30-hours will go home with hardware claimed by only a handful of people.

Checkpoints

We will hide a yet to be determined number of checkpoints throughout the course. They will be directly on course and easy to recognize. Competitors are required to arrive at the finish line with a token from each checkpoint (what the item is will be disclosed at a later date). If you do not have all of the required checkpoint items for your event – you will be disqualified from consideration for the cash prize ($1.00) and buckles.

Time cut-off

There will be a cut-off this year in Jackson Park (Old Towne) around mile 85. You must leave Jackson park by 2:00am EST. Unclaimed drop bags will be moved to the finish line at this time.

NUE

The Marji Gesick is part of the National Ultra Endurance mountain bike race series. 12 of the toughest, longest races across the country.

Coach Rob Lee knows his stuff. From winning over 100 races during his own athletic career, to the athletes that he has coached while they achieved 1 World Champion, 1 European Champion, 3 National Champions, dozens of National age group Champions and medalists, he has a long history of success.

Coach Rob designed these Marji Gesick training plans specifically with the needs of the Marji Gesick racer and course in mind. The plans have options for both 50-mile and 100-mile Marji and can use either a heart rate monitor or a power meter.

The best part? They’re only $7.95. Coach Rob believes in the Marji Gesick. Don’t let him down.

GPS Files

Marji Gesick is a self-supported race. A GPS unit and knowledge of how to use it is required. If you can’t figure out how to get these GPX files onto your expensive gadget then maybe this is not the event for you. You should try triathlons. Or golf. For your own safety, and our sanity, please do not enter the Upper Peninsula if this is an issue for you.

These files were posted on 09.19.2018 @7:44am EST. These are the final GPS files.
